Gli affreschi di San Giovanni in Monterrone

The present study deals with the frescoes of the church-crypt of San Giovanni in Monterrone in Matera. Starting from a more general research, relating to the cultural context of the underground structures of southern Italy in which these frescoes are inserted, the case of San Giovanni in Monterrone was then specifically analysed. The aim of this work was to study the links that these works have with Byzantine culture, rediscovering styles and iconography that lead back to the East.

Il presente studio ha come oggetto gli affreschi della chiesa-cripta di San Giovanni in Monterrone a Matera. Partendo da una ricerca più generale, relativa al contesto culturale delle strutture ipogee del sud Italia in cui si inseriscono questi affreschi, si è poi analizzato nello specifico il caso di San Giovanni in Monterrone. L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è stato quello di studiare i legami che queste opere hanno con la cultura bizantina, ritrovando stilemi e iconografie che riconducono all’oriente.
