Shaping the Italian discourse on race, ethnicity, and identity: A translation proposal of Mixed/Other by Natalie Morris

Translation is a necessity, an urgency for the people that do not know where to find words to talk about their identity in terms of ethnicity, and the public debate about racism and race on Italian-speaking social media, articles, political discourse shows on one hand a tendency of borrowing English terms to express these concepts, and on the other, a lack of consciousness and awareness on how to talk about these matters. The aim of this work is to bring words and experiences into the Italian culture through the translation of the book Mixed/Other by journalist and writer Natalie Morris, hoping to foster constructive debates about racial identity, discrimination, and real life experiences of mixed people, the new generation of Europe, which is still quite invisible.

La traduzione è una necessità, un'urgenza, per chi non sa dove trovare le parole per parlare della propria identità in termini di etnia, e il dibattito pubblico su razzismo e razza sui social media di lingua italiana, negli articoli e nei discorsi politici mostra da un lato la tendenza a prendere in prestito termini dalla lingua inglese per esprimere questi concetti, dall'altro una mancanza di coscienza e consapevolezza su come parlare di questi argomenti. L'obiettivo di questo lavoro è portare parole ed esperienze nella cultura italiana attraverso la traduzione del libro Mixed/Other della giornalista e scrittrice Natalie Morris, sperando di promuovere dibattiti costruttivi sull'identità razziale, la discriminazione e le esperienze reali delle persone miste, la nuova generazione d'Europa, ancora piuttosto invisibile.
