The central claim of astrology is that the psychological attributes and personal destinies of individual human beings are linked to the positions of celestial bodies at the time of each person's birth. The aim of this theses is to review current evidence on the potential relationships between zodiac signs and personality traits, specifically examining whether astrology can predict these traits. An additional aim is to review current evidence on potential astrology-based stereotypes and social prejudices. Historical origins, and positive and negative implications of astrology were examined. Most of the examined studies indicated no convincing scientific evidence on the astrology's ability to accurately predict individuals’ personality traits based on their zodiac sign. Evidence also showed that beliefs in paranormal determinism (including astrology) has been associated with prejudice towards disadvantaged groups, and astrological beliefs can fuel harmful stereotypes and discriminatory behaviors towards certain zodiac signs –– e.g., individuals born under the sign of Virgo are discriminated due to negative astrological stereotypes in the Chinese culture. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and gain a better understanding of astrology's impact on personality and human behavior. Disseminating these results in a popular manner could contribute to reducing stereotypes and combating paranormal determinism.

Abstract

The central claim of astrology is that the psychological attributes and personal destinies of individual human beings are linked to the positions of celestial bodies at the time of each person's birth. The aim of this theses is to review current evidence on the potential relationships between zodiac signs and personality traits, specifically examining whether astrology can predict these traits. An additional aim is to review current evidence on potential astrology-based stereotypes and social prejudices. Historical origins, and positive and negative implications of astrology were examined. Investigation of a theory above all scientificity: questioning the relationship between zodiac signs and personality traits
