This paper aims to provide an overview of the phenomenon of competitive victimhood, which implies members of different groups fighting with each other in order to gain the status of victim; this phenomenon has gained increasing attention from researchers, also due to its undeniable influence in maintaining intergroup conflict. In particular, the issue will be addressed illustrating its psychological causes, with particular reference to the salience of social identity; the perceived benefits of this competition will then be examined, as well as the consequences that contribute to the duration of the examined conflicts. Again with reference to identity dynamics, possible strategies to promote reconciliation will be explored.
