This thesis delves into the voices of peace during the tumultuous period of World War I, focusing on women poets and their role as pacifists. It examines the historical context during the First World War both in England and in Canada, exploring the moral, humanistic, and aesthetic anti war sentiments that emerged among women. The transformative impact of modern war, suffrage and peace movements, and women's war efforts are analyzed, highlighting their cultural significance. Important women such as Edith Sitwell, Vera Brittain, and Marjorie Pickthall are analyzed for poems and their individualistic responses to war as well as their profound impact on the cultural landscape. Finally, in the thesis appendix we find an interview with Barbara, the author's grandmother, who provides insights into her father William J. Whitehead's experience as a soldier during World War I at Ypres.
Questa tesi approfondisce le voci di pace durante il tumultuoso periodo della Prima guerra mondiale, concentrandosi sulle donne poeta e sul loro ruolo di pacifiste. Esamina il contesto storico della guerra sia in Inghilterra che in Canada, esplorando i sentimenti morali, umanistici ed estetici contro la guerra che emersero tra le donne. L'impatto trasformativo della guerra moderna, dei movimenti per il suffragio e per la pace e degli sforzi bellici delle donne vengono analizzati, evidenziandone il significato culturale. Donne importanti come Edith Sitwell, Vera Brittain e Marjorie Pickthall sono analizzate per le loro poesie pacifiste e per il loro profondo impatto sul paesaggio culturale. Infine, nell’appendice della tesi troviamo l’intervista di Barbara, nonna dell'autrice, che fornisce approfondimenti sull'esperienza del padre William J. Whitehead, come soldato durante la Prima guerra mondiale a Ypres.
