Pietrasanta, is a municipal district located in Versilia, a historical region in north-western Tuscany within the province of Lucca. The town, renamed "Little Athens" by the artist Igor Mitoraj, is known internationally and in Italy for its excellent sculpture production and as a fertile context for contemporary artist. The marble workshop and artistic foundries of Pietrasanta are institutions animated by a wide variety of professionals whose task is to assiste sculptors during their artistic genesis and the physical creation of their works. The objective of this thesis is to perform a historical-geographical analysis of the city of Pietrasanta, exploring the artistic vocation that distinguishes it. Focusing on the bronze scupltural work, it traces the places where the raw material used for artistic creations were found and analyses the working methods implemented within the forges of the Versilia municipality. In order to provide a cross-section of today's cultural activities in the town, the figure of Igor Mitoraj - polish sculptor of international fame and honorary citizen of Pietrasanta - is treated through the presentation of his Atelier and work exhibited in public spaces in the area.
Pietrasanta è un comune situato in Versilia, una regione storica della Toscana nord-occidentale all'interno della provincia di Lucca. La città, ribattezzata dall'artista Igor Mitoraj "La Piccola Atene", è conosciuta nel panorama italiano e internazionale per la sua eccellente produzione scultorea e come fertile contesto per artisti contemporanei. I laboratori di marmo e le fonderie artistiche pietrasantine sono istituzioni animate da una grande varietà di figure professionali che hanno il compito di assistere gli scultori durante la loro genesi artistica e la realizzazione fisica delle opere. L'obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di realizzare un'analisi storico-geografica della città di Pietrasanta, approfondendo la vocazione artistica che la caratterizza. Focalizzandosi sulla lavorazione scultorea del bronzo, si vanno a rintracciare i luoghi adibiti al reperimento delle materie prime usate per le creazioni artistiche e si analizzano le modalità di lavorazione messe in atto all'interno delle fucine del comune versiliese. Al fine di fornire uno spaccato delle odierne attività culturali della città, viene trattata la figura di Igor Mitoraj - scultore polacco di fama internazionale e cittadino onorario di Pietrasanta - attraverso la presentazione del suo Atelier e delle opere esposte negli spazi pubblici del territorio.
