The paper aims to provide a reading of Jordan Peele's film Nope (2022) that situates the work within the western genre by grasping aspects of it that can be traced back to the African-American director's stated political stance against a structural racism that still exists today in the United States toward the black community. Starting from the strategic importance that the film genre system has within the production and receptive dimensions of the film industry's products, the first part of the paper looks at the development of the Western in its ability to reflect the tensions running through the social context, with specific attention to the colonial dimension of American history. From these premises, we come to the analysis of those elements that make Nope a film capable of inscribing itself within the practices of rewriting that, as evidenced by recent scholarly orientations, contribute to a rearticulation of the narrative of the "nation," including voices frequently marginalized by the Eurocentric canon.
L'elaborato si propone di fornire una lettura del film Nope (2022) di Jordan Peele che inserisca l'opera all'interno del genere western cogliendone gli aspetti riconducibili alla dichiarata presa di posizione politica del regista afroamericano nei confronti di un razzismo strutturale tutt’oggi esistente negli Stati Uniti verso la comunità nera. Partendo dall'importanza strategica che il sistema dei generi cinematografici ha all'interno della dimensione produttiva e ricettiva dei prodotti dell'industria cinematografica, la prima parte dell’elaborato guarda allo sviluppo del western nella sua capacità di riflettere le tensioni che attraversano il contesto sociale, con specifica attenzione alla dimensione coloniale della storia americana. Da tali premesse si giunge all’analisi di quegli elementi che rendono Nope un film capace di inscriversi all'interno delle pratiche di riscrittura che, come evidenziato da recenti orientamenti di studio, concorrono a una riarticolazione della narrazione della “nazione”, comprensiva delle voci frequentemente marginalizzate dal canone eurocentrico.
