The object of this thesis is smart cities as an innovative concept of urban development. Nowadays we can state that one of the twenty-first century's peculiarities is urbanization. If in some ways this phenomenon contributed to promoting progress, it also exposed some challenges related mostly to the environment and the social citizens' well-being. It is at this juncture that the smart city concept comes into play, aiming to improve the quality of life of its citizens by making the city a more efficient and innovative place through the use of new technologies. The first chapter of this thesis is devoted to the theoretical introduction to the concept of smart city, its evolution over time, and its relationship with sustainability. In the second chapter, the focus is on the case study of the city of Budapest. The municipality has been committed for years to adopting an increasingly intelligent approach to the development of the city. The third chapter, on the other hand, highlights how the interventions in the smart city of Budapest have been implemented, and which were the successful factors, also by highlighting the most critical issues, the achieved results, and the future prospects.
