This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention for the promotion of a positive body image, called More than Body Appearance (MBA), in a sample of athletes who practice aesthetic sports. Aesthetic sports are among the sports disciplines that focus on thinness and physical appearance; in fact, female athletes who practice aesthetic sports are more at risk of developing body dissatisfaction and eating disorders (EDs) than athletes who practice sports disciplines not based on physical appearance. Specifically, the MBA psychological intervention aims to increase the protective factors linked to positive body image and to reduce the risk factors linked to the emergence of body dissatisfaction and ED in athletes practicing aesthetic sports. Participants (n=67) were assigned in a randomized controlled manner to two groups, one experimental (n=34) and one waiting-list control (n=33), which were compared at two different time points, i.e. at T0 (pre-intervention for the experimental group and baseline assessment for the waiting-list control group) and at T1 (post-intervention for the experimental group and pre-intervention for the waiting-list control group). This study showed an increase in positive body image and a reduction in body dissatisfaction and the risk of developing ED in female athletes practicing aesthetic sports.

Abstract
This study showed an increase in positive body image and a reduction in body dissatisfaction and the risk of developing ED in female athletes practicing aesthetic sports.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
