Castel d'Ario (Castellaro at the time that will be examined) is a town in the province of Mantua which stands on a centuries-old border line between Mantua and Verona. The town could represent nothing more than one of the many other examples in the same area, and its castle could be nothing more than one of the many strategic medieval defensive points that fell into disuse in the modern age, when relations between the Gonzagas of Mantua and the Republic of Venice became so consolidated that the original defense purpose of these castles became useless. However, Castel d'Ario represents an exception compared to its neighbors. In fact, although for much of its history it was subject of the lords of Mantua, they actually governed Castellaro only as feudal lords of the episcopal principality of Trento, the true lord of this center since 1082 AD, when the bishop of Trento Enrico requested and obtained dominion over the center of Castellaro from the Emperor Henry IV. In this study we have reconstructed the history of Castellaro and its castle, the true fulcrum of a curia which included several villages, during the Late Middle Ages, analyzing its unique characteristics and at the same time perfectly framed in the typical dynamics of society and late medieval Italian politics.

Abstract
In this study we have reconstructed the history of Castellaro and its castle, the true fulcrum of a curia which included several villages, during the Late Middle Ages, analyzing its unique characteristics and at the same time perfectly framed in the typical dynamics of society and late medieval Italian politics.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
