Mental illness is a complex human event, which causes suffering in the individual, has repercussions on family and community relationships and is connected to the social, cultural and economic conditions in which it occurs. It is a theme that still represents something special for many today uncertain, almost inconceivable; it is often burdened by prejudice and is a source of stigma. In the first part of this paper, starting from a definition of stigma and stigmatization processes, the different types of stigma are examined, focusing on stigma in the field of mental health, from discrimination in the main mental disorders to the stigma experienced by family members of people in the same conditions. The second part analyzes the interventions found to be effective in the fight against stigma and the role that personal empowerment has in the destigmatization process. The third part deals with the figure of the Professional Educator in the psychiatric field, in particular his role and skills within stigma reduction programmes.

The third part deals with the figure of the Professional Educator in the psychiatric field, in particular his role and skills within stigma reduction programmes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
