The qualitative investigation carried out as part of this thesis work, inspired by the research conducted by anthropologist Paola Tabet in the 1990s, develops at a time when multiculturalism is inherent in the school experience, regardless of the presence of pupils with a migrant background. It therefore aims to investigate and deepen the perception of otherness through skin colour in fourth and fifth grade primary school pupils. This is done through the collection and analysis of personal narratives that allow us to understand the children's genuine point of view, highlighting any stereotypical thoughts present in their writings. It is therefore a matter of interpreting opinions and perceptions that are often implicit and that emerge mainly at an unconscious level in children. Various authors, over the years, have assumed and believed that the latter are colourblind (Winkler, 2009), referring to the fact that they do not notice melanin differences. However, in continuity with the Italian investigations by Tabet (1997) and more recently by Cardellini (2015) and Frisina (2018), the texts analysed lead us to refute this assertion, showing how skin colour is given great importance.
L’indagine qualitativa svolta all’interno del presente lavoro di tesi, ispirata alla ricerca condotta dall’antropologa Paola Tabet negli anni Novanta, si sviluppa in un’epoca in cui la multicultura è insita nell’esperienza scolastica, a prescindere dalla presenza di alunni con background migratorio. Si propone, quindi, di indagare e approfondire la percezione dell’alterità attraverso il colore della pelle negli alunni di classe quarta e quinta della scuola primaria. Ciò avviene grazie alla raccolta e all’analisi di narrazioni personali che ci permettono di comprendere il genuino punto di vista dei bambini, evidenziando eventuali pensieri stereotipati presenti nei loro scritti. Si tratta, dunque, di interpretare opinioni e percezioni spesso implicite e che emergono soprattutto a livello inconscio nei bambini. Vari autori, negli anni, hanno supposto e creduto che questi ultimi siano colorblind (Winkler, 2009), facendo riferimento al fatto che essi non notino le differenze melaniniche. Tuttavia, in continuità con le indagini italiane di Tabet (1997) e più recentemente di Cardellini (2015) e Frisina (2018), i testi analizzati ci portano a confutare questa affermazione, dimostrando come al colore della pelle venga data grande importanza.
