Fortuna e ricezione del “Male oscuro” di Giuseppe Berto nel mondo anglofono

The dissertation focuses on an in-depth study of the life of the Italian novelist Giuseppe Berto with an analysis of his novel Il male oscuro (1964). The work is structured in three chapters, each devoted and focused on specific aspects of the author's life in connection with the novel. The first chapter presents a biographical excursus, tracing the main phases of the author's life: his childhood, influenced by fascist ideologies and the beginning of a tormented relationship with his father; the second phase, marked by constant travel and participation in the Second World War; and the last phase, characterised by a strong call for isolation from society in search of a bucolic tranquillity. The second chapter, the core of the entire work, focuses on the analysis of the novel ‘Il male oscuro’ in order to understand the reason for the author's conflict with the father figure, and to explain the origin of the author's neurosis, which Berto defines as ‘male oscuro’. By analysing certain passages in the novel, it helps shed light on the causes and consequences of certain salient events in the author's life. The last chapter concerns the translation of the novel ‘Il male oscuro’ (1964) compared with the English version entitled ‘Incubus’ (1966).

L’elaborato verte sull’approfondimento della vita del romanziere italiano Giuseppe Berto, e sull’analisi del suo romanzo “Il male oscuro” (1964). Il lavoro è ripartito in tre capitoli, ciascuno dedicato a specifici aspetti della vita dell’autore in relazione al romanzo. Il primo capitolo è un excursus biografico, nel quale si ripercorrono le principali fasi della vita dell’autore: la sua infanzia, dominata dalle ideologie fasciste e durante la quale prende avvio il rapporto tormentato con il padre); una seconda fase, fatta di viaggi e segnata dalla partecipazione alla seconda guerra mondiale; e l’ultima fase, caratterizzata da un forte richiamo all’isolamento dalla società in cerca di una quiete bucolica. Il secondo capitolo, il nocciolo dell’intero elaborato, verte sull’analisi del romanzo "Il male oscuro" per comprendere il motivo del conflitto dell'autore con la figura paterna, e per spiegare l'origine della nevrosi dell'autore, che Berto definisce "male oscuro". Tramite l'analisi di alcuni passaggi del romanzo vengono messe in luce cause e conseguenze di alcuni eventi salienti nella vita dell'autore. L’ultimo capitolo riguarda l’analisi di traduzione del romanzo “Il male oscuro” (1964) messo a confronto con la versione inglese intitolata “Incubus” (1966).
