The following paper aims to analyze the topic of misophonia, also known as syndrome of selective sensitivity to sound. This is a chronic condition in which some subjects carry out aggressive physical or verbal actions following repeated listening to certain particular sounds, called "triggers". The reasons that led me to delve deeper into this topic are of a dual nature. The interest in this little-known but very fascinating topic, in my opinion, and the desire to make other people aware of the scientific explanations underlying what, despite not yet being defined as a disorder, is experienced by many. The objective of this research is to highlight the topic of misophonia in its entirety, how it has been studied and compared with other disorders recognized within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM-5 and finally how it can be addressed according to specific treatments. The following thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter of this thesis aims to explain misophonia and its general characteristics, in particular it analyzes a study conducted by Schroder, Vulink and Denys in 2013 and how this was advantageous for future studies. The second chapter deals with the strategies used to combat misophonia and the different treatments studied on individuals. In particular, it analyzes CBT cognitive behavioral therapy and the counterconditioning treatment created by Thomas H. Dozier. Finally, the third chapter focuses on pediatric misophonia. Thanks to this paper it is possible to analyze misophonia, which is still a little studied and known topic today, and some of its important factors, such as where it comes from, how it can be treated and what the implications of this topic are for the little ones. The scientific literature regarding this topic is still limited, so this work will limit itself to summarizing the studies carried out and the conclusions drawn.
