According to the data provided by the AIOM Report "The Numbers of Cancer in Italy 2023," in our country alone, approximately 1,400 new cases of neoplasia are diagnosed each year in the age group between 0 and 14 years (with an incidence of about 150 new cases per 1,000,000 people). Thus, young patients find themselves having to deal first with the disease itself and then with its outcomes, both physically and psychologically. During this complicated journey, the child's body, the physical seat of the disease, along with the psychological aspect, becomes the primary focus of attention for doctors and the family. The body is the primary means that allows an individual to interact with the external world and consequently build an identity, opinions, and beliefs. Developing a positive body image is therefore an extremely important task to ensure the correct growth of the child, as it significantly influences adaptive behavior and his psychological and social well-being; it is, therefore, necessary to pay particular attention, especially in cases like these, to the aspects, observable and not, that could hinder the development of a positive body image. The construct of body image indicates a multidimensional representation of one's physical appearance; it is primarily based on the perception each person has of themselves but is also strongly influenced by the subject's interactions with the surrounding environment. Oncological diseases, therapies, and their consequences can therefore lead to severe impairments of the physical and mental integrity of a child or adolescent, with multidimensional repercussions in the short, medium, and long term. The aim of this thesis is to investigate specifically the experiences of young oncology patients, in order to early identify any signs of distress to be able to intervene in due time.
