Counseling psychology is a discipline that has evolved significantly over time, adapting to cultural contexts and social needs. Originally developed in response to emerging needs in the social and psychological fields, counseling has become a recognized and widespread practice globally. This thesis explores the historical evolution of counseling, analyzing its main definitions and applications, and highlighting the differences compared to psychotherapy and supportive interventions. Particular attention is given to the Italian context, examining the origins of counseling in Italy and discussing the current situation, characterized by debates and regulatory developments. This provides a basis for better comparing and understanding the dynamics of counseling in international contexts. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the United States and other Western countries, analyzing the regulations that govern the practice of counseling and their impact on the professional identity of counselors. The variations in counseling practice are examined, considering how cultural and contextual influences shape the approach and methodologies used in different countries. This study aims to offer a significant contribution to understanding counseling as a dynamic and complex discipline, emphasizing the importance of an integrated approach that considers cultural and regulatory diversities. The conclusions will provide insights into potential future directions for the practice and regulation of counseling on a global level.
