One of the current most intriguing puzzles of cosmology is the acceleration in the expansion of the universe and what could be behind it, called dark energy. Nowadays numerous theories have arisen with the goal of trying to explain it, the majority of which attempting to modify or extend General Relativity. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the screening mechanisms inherent in modified gravity models, which are essential to reconcile their predictions with local observations. The study will encompass a review of dark energy's theoretical and observational properties, a survey of modified gravity models with their implications, a detailed analysis of the screening mechanisms present in literature, to then conclude with a short review of the experiments that are able to test and constrain these models.
Uno dei più profondi e stimolanti enigmi contemporanei della cosmologia è l'accelerazione nell'espansione dell'universo e ciò che ne potrebbe essere responsabile, chiamato energia oscura. Numerose teorie sono state avanzate per spiegare questo fenomeno, molte delle quali cercano di modificare o estendere la Relatività Generale. Questa tesi si propone di indagare i meccanismi di screening intrinseci ai modelli di gravità modificata, essenziali per conciliarne le predizioni teoriche con le osservazioni. Lo studio comprenderà una revisione delle proprietà teoriche e osservative dell'energia oscura, una panoramica dei modelli di gravità modificata con le loro implicazioni, un'analisi dettagliata dei meccanismi di screening presenti in letteratura e, infine, una breve rassegna degli esperimenti in grado di testare e vincolare questi modelli.
