STUDY OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this thesis is to assess, through the administration of questionnaires, pregnant women's and mothers' knowledge of the consequences of poor oral hygiene. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was carried out by constructing an anonymous questionnaire disseminated to patients at dental offices in Camposampiero and Vigonza and at the Rovigo Diabetes Service. The questionnaire was divided into three parts, the first containing general information about the pregnant woman, one on the period of pregnancy, and one post-pregnancy non-compulsory. Forty-three questionnaires were collected from women who were pregnant or had children up to 3 years of age during the period May-July 2024. RESULTS: Based on the age of the pregnant woman, a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) was observed regarding knowledge of the complications given by poor oral hygiene and incorrect practices for herself, the unborn child, and the baby. In particular, reduced adherence to routine dental examinations, reduced information from health and social workers on the relationship between poor oral hygiene and potential diseases to self and fetus, and knowledge of the transmissibility of carious disease from parent to infant was shown in the subjects. Stratification by age distinguished into 3 groups testified to a lower habit of daily oral hygiene, i.e., flossing, mouthwash, and amount of times teeth were brushed, in younger and older women compared with women of intermediate age (p < 0.057). There was also a difference in the use of the least used alcohol mouthwash in pregnant women with Gestational Diabetes (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: analysis of the collected data shows the need to implement public awareness of the importance of caring for one's own and one's child's oral hygiene to avoid the onset of any problems, particularly in women at high risk of future diabetes and cardiovascular disease such as those with gestational diabetes. Information provided to parents on their own and their children's oral health should be implemented especially that on the role of nutrition, bacteria and their transmissibility, and the importance of caring for the oral cavity of infants from birth. Rotating around parental figures are health figures who need to be adequately educated to provide them with safe and comprehensive information and could be supported by professional educators who through the creation of hygiene projects go to help disseminate correct oral practices.
