Objective: this review of the literature aims to investigate the most effective prevention techniques aimed at reducing the incidence of hand and wrist injuries in striking combat sports, such as boxing, taekwondo and karate. Problem definition: during the practice of these sports, the distal extremities of the upper limbs are subjected to intense and repeated loads that often lead to acute and even chronic injuries that compromise the athlete’s health and activity. Materials and methods: the research was conducted on scientific databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar and Scopus. The selection of studies considered articles published in Italian and English, including both epidemiological studies on hand and wrist injuries and studies on prevention of them. Results: the research initially identified 118 scientific publications; after a careful literature review, 7 articles were identified, of which 4 are related to the research question, while the remaining 3 are general considerations on the prevention of sports injuries in the field of research. The studies report the following prevention strategies: use of appropriate bandages and gloves, adequate muscle conditioning, learning and performing a correct athletic gesture. Discussion: the analysis of available literature showed a greater interest in boxing and related hand and wrist injuries ("traumatic carpal boss","boxer’s knuckle"). Although the literature considers protective bandages and specific muscle strengthening as the main prevention strategies to be adopted, there is a lack of adequate regulations and unambiguous guidelines to follow. Conclusions: the review identified several prevention strategies for hand and wrist injuries in combat sports, but did not identify a more effective technique; furthermore, there is a lack of reference models for the execution of protective bandages and the planning of strength training for athletes. This study therefore shows the need for future research to establish precise protocols and indications to preserve the best possible health of athletes. Key words: hand injuries, wrist injuries, combat sports, martial arts, prevention, boxing, injury prevention, protective equipment, taekwondo, strengthening exercises, wrapping techniques, taping.
