This dissertation aims to explore the representation of the female body and its metamorphoses in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1871). Tracing the evolution from folk tales to fairy tales, this dissertation shows how the genre of children’s literature evolved, focusing specifically on nineteenth-century fairy tales. In particular, I intend to take into consideration the historical period of publication of Lewis Carroll’s works, specifically regarding the role of women and the ideals of beauty, femininity and appetites in the Victorian Age. Lastly, in light of the previous findings, I propose the analysis of Lewis Carroll’s works, focusing on the symbolism of food and its role in Alice’s metamorphoses.
