Ausonius’ Commemoratio professorum Burdigalensium offers a rare perspective on the men that inhabited the scholastic institutions of fourth century Gaul: Bordeaux’s "rhetores", "grammatici" and "subdoctores" are forever immortalised in their merits, and sometimes even their vices, yet always within canonical modules of rhetoric, even if aptly dissimulated. This thesis has the goal to try and draw the picture of a “perfect” teacher at the school of Bordeaux, starting from Ausonius’ opus, which is a privileged witness of the gallic education system in late antiquity. In the first place, other than a short biographical segment dedicated to the author of the Commemoratio, readers will have access to a concise presentation of Ausonius’ work itself and the characters of the literary genre it pertains to, that is the "laus", which will be briefly analysed in its various theoretical elaborations, starting from Aristotle all the way to the treatises of the imperial age. Then, the study will consider the canonical modules of the representation of teachers within the ancient world, which could be divided into three main currents: a “satirical” one, negatively connoted and usually pertaining to satire and comedy, an “ideal” one, championed by Quintilian’s "Institutio oratoria", and one that could be defined “realistic”, that is oftentimes the point of view of authors either directly and actively involved with teaching or at the very least quite close to the teaching world. The final aim of this work is to draw a potential portrait of the professor of the late Roman Empire that is as true to life as possible.

Abstract
The final aim of this work is to draw a potential portrait of the professor of the late Roman Empire that is as true to life as possible.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
