This dissertation focuses on the linguisic and cultural strategies adopted in the translation of El Diablo De Las Provincias, a novel by Colombian writer Juan Cárdenas. Through the analysis of this specific case, the origins and evolution of translation over the years are explored, in particular in the context of Spain and, more broadly, Spanish-speaking countries. Attention is also given to the theoretical and practical aspects of the translation process, as well as the challenges a professional translator may face in their work: from the adaptation of idiomatic expressions that have no direct equivalent in the translator’s native language or the target language of the text. Other challenges are related to the complexity of understanding local cultural references and to the reproduction of the author’s stylistic peculiarities. A fundamental aspect is the deep understanding of the subject matter, enabling the translator to convey the content from one language to another without losing the meaning the original author intended to communicate and the identity that defines the text’s cultural and linguistic belonging. The first chapter presents an overview of the main translation theories, with historical references. It also introduces the author Juan Cárdenas himself, the sociocultural environment that shaped him and his works, including El Diablo De Las Provincias, which deals with themes such as social degradation, identity search and cultural backwardness. The second chapter presents a translation proposal for several chapters of the novel, the difficulties noticed, and the stylistic and linguistic choices regarding local expressions. These are then further discussed in the third and final chapter. This word is the result of a strong interest in translation traditions and the literature of Spanish-speaking countries, particularly focusing on the idiomatic variations that characterize South America.
La tesi in oggetto si concentra sulle strategie linguistiche e culturali adottate nella traduzione di El Diablo De Las Provincias, romanzo dello scrittore colombiano Juan Cárdenas. Attraverso l’analisi di questo caso specifico si approfondiscono le origini e l’evoluzione che hanno caratterizzato la traduzione nel corso degli anni, soprattutto nel contesto della Spagna e, più in generale, dei paesi ispanofoni. Ci si sofferma inoltre sugli aspetti teorici e pratici del processo traduttivo e sulle eventuali problematiche che il traduttore professionista può dover affrontare nello svolgimento del proprio lavoro: dall’adattamento di espressioni idiomatiche prive di corrispondenza nella propria lingua madre e lingua di destinazione dell’opera, alla complessità di comprendere riferimenti culturali locali, alla riproduzione delle peculiarità stilistiche dell’autore stesso. Aspetto fondamentale è la comprensione della materia da trattare, per poter trasporre il contenuto da una lingua all’altra senza mai perdere il significato che l’autore del testo originale intende diffondere e l’identità che sancisce appartenenza culturale e linguistica. Nel primo capitolo viene presentata una panoramica delle principali correnti della traduzione, con riferimenti storici. Si introduce poi l’autore Juan Cárdenas, il contesto socioculturale che ha influenzato la sua figura e le sue opere, tra cui El Diablo De Las Provincias, il quale affronta temi come la degradazione sociale, la ricerca identitaria e l’arretratezza culturale. Il secondo capitolo presenta invece una proposta di traduzione di alcuni capitoli del romanzo, le cui difficoltà riscontrate e le scelte stilistiche e linguistiche in relazione a termini locali trovano argomentazione nel terzo ed ultimo capitolo. Il lavoro è il risultato di un forte interesse per quanto riguarda la tradizione traduttologica e la letteratura dei paesi di lingua ispanofona e in particolare per le variazioni idiomatiche che caratterizzano il Sud America.
