Climate change is one of the most complex global challenges humanities faces today. Global warming is tied to an increasingly unsustainable human lifestyle, driven by principles and values of western culture. In this context, the urgency for a paradigm shift aimed at protecting the planet and living beings becomes ever more pressing. Yoga is a holistic discipline known for its physical and mental benefits. Beyond being a physical practice, yoga promotes a lifestyle based on awareness and mindfulness, as well as sustainable value and harmony with the environment. The main aim of the research is to investigate the relationship between yoga practice and sustainable diet, in the Italian context. The hypothesis is that yoga practice promotes sustainable food consumption through mindfulness, psychological well-being, connection with nature and global citizenship. To explore these hypotheses, an online questionnaire was submitted, by Qualtrics platform. Participants were split into two groups: yoga practitioners (N = 38) and non practitioners (N = 70). The dependent variable explored includes food knowledge (awareness of environmental impact of food production and consumption), eating attitude (daily eating behavior), intentions to reduce meat consumption and motivations (personal, pro-social and moral) that drive the food consumption. Data analyses were conducted by SPSS software. T-test was used for group comparison, Pearson coefficient was used to analyze the relationship between variables, and regression models were applied to test the mediation effect. The result showed that yoga practice was positively correlated with food knowledge, intentions to reduce meat consumption, prosocial and moral motivation, through an indirect relationship mediated by connection with nature. Instead, no direct correlation was found between yoga and eating attitudes such as yoga and personal motivation. Furthermore, no significant mediation of psychological well-being, mindfulness and global citizenship emerged.
Il cambiamento climatico rappresenta una delle sfide globali più complesse che deve affrontare l’umanità. Il riscaldamento globale è legato a uno stile di vita sempre meno sostenibile da parte dell’uomo, alimentato dai principi e dai valori della cultura occidentale. In questo contesto diventa sempre più urgente la necessità di un cambio di paradigma, volto alla salvaguardia del pianeta e degli esseri viventi che lo abitano. Lo yoga è una disciplina olistica ampiamente riconosciuta per benefici fisici e mentali. Lo yoga, oltre ad essere una pratica fisica, promuove uno stile di vita basato sulla presenza mentale e consapevolezza, nonché sui principi di sostenibilità e armonia con l’ambiente. L’obiettivo della presente ricerca è quello di indagare la relazione tra la pratica yoga e il comportamento alimentare sostenibile, nel contesto italiano. L’ipotesi di ricerca è che la pratica yoga promuova il consumo alimentare sostenibile attraverso una maggiore mindfulness, un maggior benessere psicologico, una maggiore connessione con la natura e una maggiore global citizenship. Per indagare queste ipotesi di ricerca è stato somministrato un questionario online, tramite la piattaforma Qualtrics. I partecipanti sono stati divisi in due gruppi: praticanti yoga (N = 38) e non praticanti yoga (N = 70). Le variabili dipendenti prese in esame riguardano la conoscenza alimentare (consapevolezza dell’impatto del consumo alimentare sull’ambiente), le abitudini alimentari (comportamenti alimentari quotidiani), le intenzioni a ridurre il consumo di carne e le motivazioni (personale, prosociale e morale) che guidano il comportamento alimentare. L’analisi dei dati è stata condotta tramite l’utilizzo del software SPSS. È stato effettuato un t-test per il confronto tra gruppi, l’indice di Pearson per analizzare le correlazioni tra le variabili e i modelli di regressione per testare la presenza di effetti di mediazione. I risultati hanno mostrato che la pratica yoga è positivamente correlata con la conoscenza alimentare, con le intenzioni a ridurre la carne, con la motivazione prosociale e morale a consumare determinati alimenti, attraverso una relazione indiretta mediata dalla connessione con la natura. Invece, non è stata confermata la correlazione tra yoga e abitudini alimentari, e neanche tra pratica yoga e motivazione personale. Inoltre, non è emersa significativa la mediazione del benessere, della mindfulness e della global citizenship nell’associazione tra pratica yoga e alimentazione.
