This thesis examines the mother-child relationship from an educational and moral perspective, focusing on the role of the educator in supporting and enhancing this crucial bond within a residential community setting. This research stems from my internship experience at the "Santa Chiara Community," managed by the "Il Lievito" Cooperative. This experience provided firsthand exposure to the complex realities faced by mothers and their children, including vulnerabilities such as alcoholism, prostitution, substance abuse, and psychopathologies, all of which threaten the mother-child dyad on physical, emotional, relational, and social levels. Following the internship, I was employed as an educator at the community. This profound personal and professional experience motivated me to further investigate this area for my thesis. The first chapter outlines the structure and operation of the "Santa Chiara Community," highlighting its modus operandi, educational goals, and the roles of the professionals involved. It analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the program, as well as the relationship between the residents and the institution. The second chapter delves into the specific areas of intervention within the community, referred to as "nuclei": domestic violence, substance abuse, and maternal psychopathologies. Each nucleus is explored through a case study, presenting the lived experience of a resident, the challenges they face, and potential opportunities for change, ultimately aiming for their autonomy. Each case study is analyzed from both psychological and pedagogical perspectives, including the presentation of the Individualized Educational Plan developed by the team. The final chapter examines the educator's role in supporting the residents, considering both the challenges and the available resources. It begins by drawing on moral philosophy to provide a deeper understanding of the complexities and resources inherent in relational contexts, as well as the importance of teamwork and community-based education. In conclusion, the thesis offers personal reflections on the invaluable and delicate work of the educator, the resources available in this specific work environment, and potential suggestions for improvement.
