The use of social media has taken on a central role in shaping body image and self-perception, significantly contributing to the development of eating disorders, especially among young people. Numerous studies highlight how digital platforms, through the spread of idealized aesthetic models and constant exposure to manipulated and distorted images, promote unrealistic expectations regarding physical appearance. This thesis explores the influence of social media on body disperception and the development of eating disorders, with a particular focus on the role of online social comparison. Comparing oneself to unattainable standards reinforces self-discrepancy and the centrality of appearance to one's sense of self, exacerbating body dissatisfaction and negative self-perception, thereby increasing the risk of dysfunctional eating behaviors. Finally, the thesis encourages a critical reflection on the potential negative impact of social media on mental health and emphasizes the need for preventive strategies and awareness-raising, as well as more mindful use of digital platforms to mitigate their harmful consequences.

Abstract
Finally, the thesis encourages a critical reflection on the potential negative impact of social media on mental health and emphasizes the need for preventive strategies and awareness-raising, as well as more mindful use of digital platforms to mitigate their harmful consequences.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
