Ostracism, or the perception of being ignored or excluded, reduces the satisfaction of basic needs and generates stress and negative affect. The research we conducted examines the effects of ostracism coming from members of one’s own group (ingroup) or from an external group (outgroup). The experimental groups are manipulated as essentialized: their members are attributed with similar, stable, and immutable characteristics. No effects were found regarding ingroup/outgroup categorization (the Cyberball paradigm was used). However, ostracism does lead to dehumanizing perceptions of both oneself and the other players. Self-dehumanization, in turn, is associated with feelings of doubt/uncertainty and a lower inclination to take action.

Abstract
Ostracism, or the perception of being ignored or excluded, reduces the satisfaction of basic needs and generates stress and negative affect. The research we conducted examines the effects of ostracism coming from members of one’s own group (ingroup) or from an external group (outgroup). The experimental groups are manipulated as essentialized: their members are attributed with similar, stable, and immutable characteristics. No effects were found regarding ingroup/outgroup categorization (the Cyberball paradigm was used). However, ostracism does lead to dehumanizing perceptions of both oneself and the other players. Self-dehumanization, in turn, is associated with feelings of doubt/uncertainty and a lower inclination to take action.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
