Emotional competence is a fundamental skill for children's emotional and psychological well-being. It encompasses several components, including the expression, understanding, and regulation of one’s own emotions as well as those of others. Emotion regulation refers to the process through which individuals monitor and modify their emotional responses according to the context or personal goals. The foundations for strong and effective emotional competence are laid during childhood, with parents playing a crucial role in the development of this ability. This study explores emotional competence skills in school-age children. Using a comparative approach, different levels of emotional competence were observed and compared, with a specific focus on emotion regulation abilities. The sample included children matched for age and intelligent quotient, in order to examine potential differences between boys and girls. The research involved the use of questionnaires administered to both children and parents, aimed at identifying possible correlations with specific parenting styles. It is hypothesized that girls will demonstrate higher self-regulation skills, and that significant differences may also emerge depending on the parenting style adopted. The results and their implications for educational and school contexts will be discussed.
