Quando l'università comincia alla fermata. Un'indagine esplorativa sul pendolarismo universitario e sul suo impatto nel vissuto e nella performance accademica di studenti e studentesse

The following thesis aims to explore, in a sociological way, the phenomenon of university commuting, in particular paying attention to all commuting students who have to take the public transports and travel long distances in order to attend university and later to go back home. This situation can expose these people to long commuting times and situations that could be unpleasant and stressful such as delays, cancellations and bad weather conditions. Through a short explorative research, the aim is therefore to study the dynamics produced by this social phenomenon among university students, in order to describe and comprehend if and in which ways these people can be influenced in their lives and in their academic performances by this condition. After a brief review of the existing literature, the research will try to answer the research questions and fulfill the knowledge objectives, using qualitative semi-structured interviews to commuters, who attend the bachelor’s degree of “Scienze Sociologiche” at the University of Padua. A snowball sampling will be used by the researcher. The commuting phenomenon will be analyzed in its dimensions: the geographic distance, the temporal and socio-economic dimension, the public transports and the academic performance, particular important for this research. At the end, the informations of the interviews and their transcription will give a global view of the experiences and performances of these commuter students and they will be useful to create a questionnaire, which could be used for future in-depth analysis.

La seguente tesi si propone di esplorare, in chiave sociologica, il fenomeno del pendolarismo universitario, in particolare prestando attenzione a tutti gli studenti e le studentesse pendolari, che, per poter frequentare l’università e in seguito rientrare alla propria abitazione, sono costrette ad utilizzare i mezzi di trasporto pubblico e ad affrontare lunghe distanze. Questo può esporre queste persone a tempi di percorrenza piuttosto elevati e a situazioni che possono risultare alquanto spiacevoli e stressanti come ad esempio ritardi, cancellazioni, scioperi e condizioni meteo avverse. Attraverso una breve indagine empirica di tipo esplorativo, si vuole quindi studiare le dinamiche prodotte da questo fenomeno sociale nelle studentesse e negli studenti universitari, al fine di descrivere e comprendere se e in che modo questi ultimi possono essere influenzati nel loro vissuto e nella loro performance accademica da questa condizione. Dopo una breve disamina critica delle letteratura esistente sull’argomento, si procederà a rispondere alle domande di ricerca e a soddisfare gli obiettivi conoscitivi attraverso delle interviste qualitative semi-strutturate a pendolari frequentanti, appartenenti al corso di laurea in Scienze Sociologiche dell’Università di Padova, reclutati mediante campionamento non probabilistico “a palla di neve”. Il fenomeno verrà suddiviso e analizzato in diverse dimensioni e sottodimensioni: la distanza geografica, la dimensione temporale, socio-economica, i mezzi di trasporto e il rendimento accademico, sul quale si presterà particolare attenzione. Infine, le informazioni ottenute tramite le interviste e la loro trascrizione permetteranno di avere una panoramica globale dell’esperienza e del rendimento di questi studenti e studentesse e saranno utili per la costruzione di un questionario finale, da utilizzare per eventuali ricerche future.
