This thesis analyzes the concepts of distributive justice, disability, and the capability approach, with particular attention to the context of Zambia and the work of the Italian non-governmental organization Pamodzi ndi Ana. The study delves into John Rawls’ philosophical thought on distributive justice, focusing on the concepts of natural lottery and social lottery, to reflect on the possibilities and limits of self-determination faced by individuals living in contexts of poverty and vulnerability. It then explores the foundations of the capability approach, developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, with reference to disability, poverty, and agency. The relationship between the capability approach and pedagogy is also highlighted, to understand how education can foster the development of individual capabilities. Finally, the case of Pamodzi ndi Ana is presented, an NGO operating in Eastern Zambia to support children with disabilities and their families. The study reports data and testimonies collected through semi-structured interviews, aiming to investigate the empowerment generated among beneficiaries thanks to the resources provided by the organization. The objective is to understand whether this social intervention represents a concrete application of the capability approach in a context of extreme precariousness and material deprivation.
