Affettività e sessualità nelle persone con disabilità intellettiva. Il punto di vista dei professionisti

Affectivity and sexuality have been denied for years in the field of intellectual disability (ID), leading to a view of the person with DI as infantile, unable to experience feelings, emotions, and especially to have sexual drives. This thesis aims to investigate this issue by analyzing the perspectives of professionals working in the field of ID, using a mixed qualitative-quantitative methodological approach. On the one hand, we aimed to verify the implementation of specific projects and courses on sexuality and affectivity in facilities dealing with DI; while on the other hand, we focused on analyzing the representations, meanings and direct experiences of professionals in relation to these issues. The methodology involved data collection through questionnaires and interviews, involving educators, physical therapists, social and health workers (OSS), volunteers, and psychologists working in the field. The results show significant recognition of the importance of affective and sexual experiences for people with ID. However, a discrepancy emerges between this theoretical recognition and the actual implementation of operational practices, which can be attributed to three main factors: shortcomings in the specific training of professionals; perceptions of other priorities in educational-assistance intervention; and limited interprofessional discussion on these issues in the team.

L’affettività e la sessualità sono state per anni negate nell’ambito della disabilità intellettiva (DI), portando ad una visione della persona con DI infantile, incapace di poter provare sentimenti, emozioni e soprattutto avere pulsioni sessuali. La presente tesi pone l’obiettivo di indagare questa tematica attraverso l’analisi delle prospettive dei professionisti che operano nel settore della DI, utilizzando un approccio metodologico misto quali-quantitativo. Da un lato si è voluto verificare l’implementazione di progetti e corsi specifici sulla sessualità e affettività nelle strutture che si occupano di DI; mentre dall’altro ci si è soffermati sull’analizzare le rappresentazioni, i significati e le esperienze dirette dei professionisti in relazione a queste tematiche. La metodologia ha previsto la raccolta di dati attraverso questionari e interviste, coinvolgendo educatori, fisioterapisti, operatori sociosanitari (OSS), volontari, psicologi che operano nel settore. I risultati evidenziano un significativo riconoscimento dell’importanza delle esperienze affettive e sessuali per le persone con DI. Tuttavia, emerge una discrepanza tra questo riconoscimento teorico e l’effettiva implementazione di pratiche operative, attribuibile a tre fattori principali: carenze nella formazione specifica dei professionisti; percezione di altre priorità nell’intervento educativo-assistenziale; limitato confronto interprofessionale su queste tematiche all’interno dell’équipe.
