This thesis explores the phenomenon of loneliness in the elderly, a topic of increasing psychological and social relevance in today’s aging population. The first part analyzes loneliness in later life, defining its psychological, social, and emotional aspects, and distinguishing it from social isolation. It also examines the changes related to aging and the influence of contemporary culture, supported by national and international statistical data. The second part investigates the causes of loneliness, including individual factors such as bereavement, retirement, and illness; family-related causes such as the decline of the extended family; and social causes linked to urbanization and institutionalization. It also reflects on the role of a social system that is often not inclusive of older adults and on the possible decline of their cultural value. Finally, the third part proposes prevention strategies, with a particular focus on intergenerational projects that encourage interaction and exchange between the elderly and young people, promoting mutual well-being and empathy. These initiatives highlight the importance of building bridges between generations to counteract isolation. The thesis concludes with a reflection on the importance of recognizing older adults not as a problem, but as a vital human and cultural resource for a cohesive and inclusive society.
