This paper, analysing some studies from the academic literature, aims to explore the potential of sport as an educational tool to promote the positive development of adolescents through the Positive Youth Development (PYD) paradigm. In a cultural context that tends to emphasise the limits and criticalities of adolescence, Positive Youth Development represents a clear change in perspective, directing attention to the potential of this developmental phase, nurtured both by individual resources and the influence of the relational context in promoting adolescents' growth. After illustrating the key principles of PYD, the focus of the thesis shifts to the ability of sport to act as a protective factor, improving adolescents' life prospects and consequently counteracting situations of vulnerability. Through the analysis of a number of academic models, the thesis attempts to highlight the key elements for bringing the principles of PYD closer to youth sports programmes, without, however, neglecting the operational challenges to be overcome in order to facilitate such integration. What emerges, therefore, is the need to build solid bridges between theory and practice, to enable adolescents to experience sport as a real opportunity for personal and social growth.
Il presente lavoro, analizzando alcuni studi tratti dalla letteratura accademica, si propone di esplorare il potenziale dello sport come strumento educativo per promuovere lo sviluppo positivo degli adolescenti attraverso il paradigma del Positive Youth Development (PYD). In un contesto culturale che tende ad enfatizzare i limiti e le criticità dell’adolescenza, il Positive Youth Development rappresenta un netto cambiamento di prospettiva, orientando l'attenzione sulle potenzialità di questa fase evolutiva, alimentate sia dalle risorse individuali che dall’influenza del contesto relazionale nel promuovere la crescita dei ragazzi. Dopo aver illustrato i principi cardine del PYD, il focus dell'elaborato si sposta sulla capacità dello sport di fungere da fattore di protezione, migliorando le prospettive di vita degli adolescenti e contrastando di conseguenza le situazioni di vulnerabilità. Attraverso l’analisi di alcuni modelli accademici, l'elaborato cerca di mettere in evidenza gli elementi chiave per avvicinare i principi del PYD ai programmi sportivi giovanili, senza tralasciare però le sfide operative da superare per favorire tale integrazione. Emerge dunque la necessità di costruire ponti solidi tra teoria e pratica, per permettere agli adolescenti di vivere lo sport come una reale opportunità di crescita personale e sociale.
