This thesis examines the phenomenon of cults and their ability to manipulate the perception that members have of themselves and the outside world. After outlining the historical and cultural development of the phenomenon and identifying the main features of destructive cults, the focus shifts to psychological manipulation techniques. In particular, the study explores the concept of Group Psychological Abuse (GPA), the taxonomy proposed by Rodríguez-Carballeira, the figure of the charismatic leader, and the strategies of control and coercion employed. It then analyzes the members’ path, from the vulnerability factors that facilitate recruitment, to the consequences of continued involvement and the difficulties of leaving the group. Finally, the last chapter addresses the relationship between mental manipulation and criminal responsibility, through the examination of judicial cases and the role of psychiatric evaluations and dissociative disorders in assessing criminal accountability.
