Toxicological analyses are of fundamental importance in clinical settings, as they allow for the determination of acute and chronic drug use, as well as the monitoring of adherence to a therapeutic treatment plan. In particular, analyses on keratin matrices (hair) are often requested for patients in psychiatric wards, where substance abuse can lead to the onset of mental disorders. The objective of this study was to optimise an analytical method for the quantification of a considerable number of psychotropic drugs on keratin matrices. As part of authorised studies, the method was applied to 15 anonymous keratin samples from patients admitted to various psychiatric wards in the Veneto region. Each sample was then subjected to rigorous analysis for the presence of both narcotics and psychotropic drugs, with the objective of identifying any potential patterns of abuse among psychiatric patients. The analyses were performed using liquid chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer, UHPLC-MS/MS Xevo TQ-S micro (Waters).
