This present paper will explore the presence and the role of the English language in the Linguistic Landscape of two departments within the University of Padua, one of Italy’s oldest and most prestigious state universities. The comparison focuses on two Departments that are similar in terms of size and presence of international courses: the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies (DiSLL) and the Department of Biology (DiBio). By analyzing the linguistic choices of both formal and informal signs across these academic environments, this study seeks to shed light on how English is incorporated into the university's communicative spaces, investigating the extent to which it contributes to inclusivity and accessibility and whether its presence aligns with the institution’s internationalization strategies. In order to provide an answer, this study employs a comparative analysis of photographic data personally taken and collected from both departments. By comparing the presence and the frequency in the use of English across the two distinct departments, one centered on language studies and the other on scientific studies, this research aims to determine whether disciplinary focus shapes Linguistic Landscape.
Questa tesi propone di analizzare la presenza e il ruolo della lingua inglese nel Linguistic Landscape di due dipartimenti dell’Università di Padova, una delle più antiche e prestigiose università statali italiane. Il confronto prende in esame due dipartimenti simili per dimensioni e per offerta formativa internazionale: il Dipartimento di Studi Linguistici e Letterari (DiSLL) e il Dipartimento di Biologia (DiBio). Attraverso l’analisi delle scelte linguistiche dei segni ufficiali e non ufficiali presenti in questi contesti accademici, lo studio intende far luce sulle modalità di integrazione dell’inglese negli spazi comunicativi universitari, valutando in che misura la sua presenza contribuisca a promuovere inclusività e accessibilità e se essa risulti coerente con le strategie di internazionalizzazione dell’Ateneo. A tal fine, la ricerca adotta un approccio comparativo basato sull’analisi di dati fotografici raccolti personalmente all’interno dei due dipartimenti. La presenza e la frequenza d’uso dell’inglese nei due diversi ambiti disciplinari, uno incentrato sugli studi linguistici e letterari, l’altro sulle scienze biologiche, vengono confrontati per verificare se e in che modo l’orientamento disciplinare incida sulla configurazione del Linguistic Landscape.
