This thesis explores the influence of the Portuguese language on Sinhala and, to a lesser extent, Tamil in Sri Lanka, with a focus on words and expressions that still remain part of the country’s language and culture today. Following a brief historical overview of the Portuguese colonial period (1505–1658), the study examines how Portuguese was introduced and taught, and the lasting impact it had on the local languages. The research draws on academic sources as well as the author’s personal experience, combining the perspective of a student of Portuguese with that of someone of Sri Lankan heritage. The aim is to show how languages influence one another over time, and how colonial history continues to shape not only vocabulary, but also cultural identity.
Questa tesi si propone di analizzare come la lingua portoghese abbia influenzato la lingua sinhala e, in una certa misura, il tamil dello Sri Lanka, soffermandosi su quei vocaboli e modi di dire che persistono nella lingua e nella cultura odierna. Nella parte iniziale verrà data una breve introduzione storica sull'epoca coloniale portoghese (1505 - 1658), successivamente, si passerà ad analizzare i percorsi tramite i quali il portoghese si è diffuso e insegnato, e come abbia segnato la lingua locale. La ricerca attinge sia a fonti accademiche sia al vissuto personale dell'autrice, combinando lo studio universitario della lingua portoghese a una prospettiva in quanto persona di origini srilankesi. L'obiettivo è illustrare l'influenza reciproco tra le lingue nel corso del tempo e come il passato coloniale continui a vivere nel linguaggio, ma anche nell'identità culturale.
