This thesis analyzes the evolution of relations between the United States and Afghanistan from the period of the Cold War until the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, highlighting the consequences that US political and military strategies have subsequently had in the context of relations with the Afghan state. The first part of the thesis analyzes the historical and political context of Afghanistan and the United States before 2001, the dynamics of the Afghan-Soviet conflict and its consequences. In the second part of the thesis instead there is an analysis on the events of 11 September and how they have forever changed the American foreign policy. Through a historical and geopolitical approach, the thesis aims to provide a critical understanding of the dynamics that have made Afghanistan a central point in the international strategy of the United States.
