The question that guided the research and writing process of this thesis was: What could be the role of the Professional Educator in the care of people with gender variance? To answer this question, it was first necessary to explore the evolution of the academic debate on the issues of sexuality and gender identity. From the research, it emerged how philosophy, sociology, law and medicine had a central role in forming the public opinion on the topic and consequently in the quality of life of trans identities during the various historical eras. By then analyzing the current situation, it was possible to identify the major obstacles that transgender people face on a daily basis in order to assert their freedom and their right to self-determination. The dissertation ends with a presentation of various educational interventions and projects to support people with gender variance and their families implemented by various categories of professionals. The scientific literature on the topic, regarding the Professional Educator, is practically non-existent, but the work already done by other professionals can create awareness and knowledge to shape new proposals for intervention.
