This study is part of a larger European project called SURE-farm which investigated the resilience of French beef cattle farms in the region of Bourbonnais and focuses on Italian farms, part of the Franco-Italian transnational supply chain. In fact, the production of beef in Veneto is strongly characterized by the presence of specialized fattening units, especially of French breeds. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the perception of resilience by Italian breeders according to the characteristics of their farm. The Italian farms involved in this study belonged to the typical bovine fattening units found in north-eastern Italy. For our study, we administered the questionnaire to about sixty farmers, of which 25 replied. The questionnaire was similar to that administered to French breeders, and was composed of a first part in which the structural and managerial characteristics of the farm were asked, and a second part relating to the importance attributed by the breeder to the functions of his own farm, to the strategies of management applied until now to ensure a future for the farm, the main challenges that the farm will have to face in the near future, and the perception that the farmer has on the resilience of his farm in terms of robustness, adaptability and transformability. The responses of the farmers were analyzed taking into account the size of the farms which were divided into large, medium and small. From the answers given, it can be deduced that the main function for beef farms in their activity is to “provide a sufficient agricultural income”. The second and third functions are respectively to ensure animal welfare and reduce the use of drugs. Subsequently, the frequency of the strategies implemented by farms in the last 5 years for risk management was analyzed, classifying the answers according to the farm size, obtaining a ranking for each. The three future challenges that farmers will have to face in the next 20 years were explored. Economic challenges, more than others, were perceived by farmers as the most important. As regards the perceived resilience, it is highlighted that there are no significant differences between farms of different size.
