Animal welfare represents one of the greatest challenges in the livestock sector. In recent years, an increasing number of consumers have been demanding improvements in animal welfare and sustainability in farming practices. In beef cattle farming, transportation represents one of the most critical phases, as it is a significant source of stress for the animals, especially if not properly managed and carried out. Improper practices and poor conditions inside the transport vehicle cause stress in cattle and can lead to injuries, diseases, and even the death of the animals, with consequent economic repercussions. In Europe, millions of animals are transported every year, covering distances that range from a few kilometers to long and exhausting journeys, sometimes even outside the European Union. These transports, in addition to having repercussions on the health and welfare of the animals being transported, also have a significant zootechnical, economic, and political impact. For these reasons, the EU has established specific regulations and directives aimed at improving animal transport, such as Regulation (EC) No 1/2005. The European Union is a global leader in animal welfare, which is in fact one of the cornerstones of the Farm to Fork strategy. This strategy aims to make food systems fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly. The CAP provides the tools to implement the strategy's objectives in the various Member States. The Farm to Fork strategy has emphasized the importance of improving regulations to promote animal welfare during transport. Thanks to the collaboration of experts and international organizations such as EFSA, Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 is currently under review, as some of its provisions are now considered outdated. This paper aims to examine, through existing literature, the impact of transport on the welfare of beef cattle.
