Triadic interactions involving the child, a social partner, and a third object or event define the emergence of Joint Attention. Depending on who initiates the interaction, two subcomponents are recognized: Responding Joint Attention (RJA) and Initiating Joint Attention. This thesis focuses on RJA, that is, the child's ability to coordinate their attentional focus with that of another person through gaze or gestures in order to share an object or a stimulus of mutual interest, observable from the fourth month of life. This early attentional ability has been widely studied as a precursor for socio-communicative and linguistic developmental trajectories and shows significant associations with aspects of self-regulation (effortful control). However, few studies address the role of culture, environment, and childrearing practices that may influence the emergence of Joint Attention, specifically RJA. This thesis proposes an exploratory investigation using a mixed-methods approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Italian mothers and migrant mothers in Italy from three different Central-West African countries (Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria). For measuring RJA, an online eye-tracking tool was used during the viewing of a specially created video content. The goal is to identify associations between the qualitative instrument (semi-structured interview) and the quantitative one (online eye-tracker) in detecting RJA and its subcomponents.

Abstract
The goal is to identify associations between the qualitative instrument (semi-structured interview) and the quantitative one (online eye-tracker) in detecting RJA and its subcomponents.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
