This dissertation studies the role of non-verbal communication, particularly facial expression of emotions, in eating disorders, analyzing how facial expression and body image are influenced by an external social framework. The primary focus is on understanding how people with eating disorders express, recognize, or inhibit emotions through their faces, and how these dynamics are linked to body image and social judgment. Those with eating disorders tend to have a reduced ability to recognize the emotions of others, due to their tendency to have reduced facial expression. In conclusion, the dissertation emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach that includes non-verbal communication, a social framework for understanding and treating eating disorders.
