Abstract: This thesis provides a bibliographic analysis of the recent field of study concerning environmental enrichment for animals in captivity and its effects. Environmental enrichment involves rearing an animal in an environment designed to benefit the individual physiologically, cognitively, and psychologically; this is achieved by implementing various types of stimuli within said environment. The first chapter defines environmental enrichment, discusses its challenges, and identifies the most commonly used types of enrichment. The second chapter focuses on the evidence regarding animal welfare resulting from enrichment; this chapter presents various experiments conducted in this field that help outline the effectiveness of this methodology. Finally, the third chapter addresses the core of the matter: the influence on cognitive performance and its potential application at a human level. Specifically, it examines the effects of enrichment on brain structures, socialization, and behaviour, as well as on animal learning; the final chapter concludes with an in-depth look at zebrafish and their use in this field.
