This thesis is part of studies about broiler chicken welfare and the relationship between humans and animals in intensive farming systems. The aim is to evaluate how the presence of the stockperson influences the behaviour of the chickens. Behavioural parameters are used as indicators of the level of fear or familiarity towards humans. The study is based on an approach and latency test, carried out in four rearing pens. Observations take place in five different points in each pen. This method aims to obtain a representative evaluation of the animals’ response inside the housing environment. The test involves two different stockpersons, recognizable by wearing different coloured overalls, one blue and one white. The study evaluates whether visual characteristics of the human figure influence the chickens’ reaction. During the tests, parameters such as the latency to approach and the number of chickens that spontaneously approach the stockperson are recorded. These data are indirect indicators of the emotional state and fear level of the animals. In addition, the main productive parameters of the rearing cycle are considered to explore possible relationships between human–animal interaction, welfare, and performance. This work aims to highlight the role of the stockperson as an integral part of the farming environment and to contribute to the development of management practices that improve animal welfare.
