This dissertation aims to analyze the main psychological and communicative mechanisms underlying deception: following a preliminary definition of the phenomenon, the principal theoretical perspectives that attempt to explain the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes through which deception may manifest are examined. The core section of the thesis is focused on a critical analysis of behavioral indicators of deception, with particular attention to the verbal, paraverbal, and nonverbal cues that the scientific literature considers the most reliable and diagnostically relevant. The interpretative limitations of these indicators are also explored, highlighting the complexity and contextual variability that characterize deception detection. Finally, both human abilities in discriminating between truth and deception and the personality traits associated with greater manipulative effectiveness are examined: building on these considerations, several of the main detection techniques, employed particularly in forensic settings ,are presented as guidelines for achieving more accurate evaluations that are less influenced by judgment biases and misconceptions regarding the manifestation of deception.
