From the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th century to the present day, the concept of work has expanded in tandem with technological innovations and now regards workers as human resources, as they possess knowledge, skills and competences that can be utilised to ensure productive efficiency. Various socio-economic analyses over the last two centuries have focused precisely on the relationship between the industrial environment and the human factor, noting that, with the advent of capitalism, the latter was often regarded in the same way as machines – as mere workforce. Therefore, in order to address these alienating effects, management literature has explored the value of the worker, thereby succeeding in answering the following question: is it appropriate to combine the term ‘resources’ with ‘human’ to denote the intrinsic qualities of the worker, without limiting this to a purely utilitarian purpose? The answers to this question were derived through a literature review aimed at understanding the historical evolution of work organisation, setting out and examining the methods of human resource management (HRM), as well as exploring the specific roles and tasks of it. In this way, it is possible to reflect on the values and ethics of HRM in order to operate strategically and sustainably, with a view to integrating organisational objectives and self-expression within a professional context that promotes collaborative and democratic relationships.

Abstract

HUMAN “RESOURCES”. ONTOLOGY AND APPLICATION OF MANAGEMENT
