This thesis was structured to comment, rework, and explore some of the contemporary and post-contemporary international literature on outdoor education and how it interacts with global development in early childhood (0-6 years). The role of nature education in socio-emotional development will be explored, in addition to the strictly scientific research conducted in this field. The choice to develop a project around these themes stems from a strong professional and personal interest in education, development, childhood, and nature. In writing this thesis, I have benefited both as a future educator and as the mother of a preschool-age child. The first chapter provides a historical-pedagogical overview of the origins of outdoor education internationally, with a specific focus on Forest Schools. The thinking of authors within the pedagogical tradition and the current Italian context will be explored. The second chapter will focus on well-being in the outdoor environment, dividing the benefits into physical and cognitive domains. The role of adults, particularly educators and parents, in outdoor education will be extensively discussed. Finally, various theories that have addressed the relationship between biopsychosocial well-being and the natural environment will be presented, focusing on the interaction between nature, education, and development. The third and final chapter will discuss scientific evidence, primarily contemporary, confirming the positive impact of outdoor education on early childhood development. It will begin with a critique of traditional schooling and then draw on international research on the outdoor environment.
