This thesis addresses the topic of numerical cognition, with particular attention to the history of and children’s understanding of the number zero. It then provides an in-depth examination of mathematics education in primary school and the cognitive processes involved in its learning. Finally, an experimental study conducted in several first-grade primary school classes is presented, aimed at investigating children’s ability to tackle and solve tasks involving the number zero. In particular, the research questions guiding this study are: Is there a relationship between forward and backward counting ability and performance on addition and subtraction tasks involving zero? Is there a relationship between visuospatial working memory, measured through the Corsi Block-Tapping Test, and performance on tasks involving zero? The data collected are then presented, and the final results are discussed.
Vengono dunque riportati i dati raccolti e discussi i risultati finali.
