The study investigates implicit rule learning in the musical and linguistic domains, contexts characterized by partially overlapping syntactic architectures and cognitive resources. Within the neuroconstructivist framework, preterm birth and subsequent admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit are considered risk factors potentially influencing the developmental trajectories of these computational skills, also in relation to the different early acoustic environment. The aim of the research was to explore the relationship between morphosyntactic and harmonic sensitivity, while simultaneously assessing the impact of prematurity. A sample of 50 children (18–36 months), equally divided between preterm and full-term births, underwent the Visual Expectation Paradigm (VExP) test using eye-tracking technology. The Music@Home-Infant questionnaire was also administered to observe correlations between the home musical environment and participants' performance. Linear mixed-effects models reveal a general attentional preference for the central area. However, a significant main effect of group emerges: full-term children show greater engagement with the task and a higher number of fixations in all areas of interest compared to preterm infants. The results suggest the presence of different attentional trajectories and processing patterns as a function of preterm birth, indicating possible implications for early environmental enrichment interventions.

Abstract

Rule Learning: The Relationship Between Musical Cognition and Language Development in Premature Infants
