Postpartum depression affects approximately 13% to 18% of women and causes disturbances in the dyadic mother-infant interaction. In this contribution we focus in particular on the effects that maternal psychopathology causes in the regulation of emotions and in the gaze behavior of the child, starting from the analysis of five studies. The studies compare the behaviors of infants with depressed mothers and infants with nonclinical mothers, observing the duration of gaze behavior, its variability, and synchrony within the dyad. Despite conflicting results on some aspects, it is possible to define how maternal psychopathology determines less coordination within the relationship and alters the quality of parenting, so that the caregiver is not able to adequately carry out the external regulatory function necessary for the child to develop his ability to regulate.

Abstract
Postpartum depression affects approximately 13% to 18% of women and causes disturbances in the dyadic mother-infant interaction. In this contribution we focus in particular on the effects that maternal psychopathology causes in the regulation of emotions and in the gaze behavior of the child, starting from the analysis of five studies. The studies compare the behaviors of infants with depressed mothers and infants with nonclinical mothers, observing the duration of gaze behavior, its variability, and synchrony within the dyad. Despite conflicting results on some aspects, it is possible to define how maternal psychopathology determines less coordination within the relationship and alters the quality of parenting, so that the caregiver is not able to adequately carry out the external regulatory function necessary for the child to develop his ability to regulate.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
